Smart Home Communication Protocols

Smart Home Communication Protocols

There are many competing vendors for the Smart Home market space using different smart home communication protocols, which are evolving fast, enabling device manufacturers to bring products to the market faster and cheaper.

Some of the more popular Smart home product communications protocol include X10, Ethernet, RS-485, 6LoWPAN, Bluetooth LE (BLE), ZigBee and Z-Wave. Each one of these protocols uses its own language to speak the various IoT connected devices and instructs them to perform a function.  Most of these protocols require an API for integration and the automation protocol transport requires direct wire connectivity, powerline (UPB), wireless hybrid or wireless connection.

Forecasted by BI Intelligence, the number of smart home devices expects to grow from 83 million in 2015 to around 193 million in 2020. The number includes smart energy equipment, such as smart meter and smart lightning, smart home appliances including washers, toilets, and coffee machines, etc, and smart home monitor and security systems. The smart home concept is with the purpose to use IoT service to help improve convenience, save energy and enhance security.
