How do smart meters communicate?

Smart meters talk to customers through interactive visual displays.
They also talk to each other and to the utility supplier.

Two wireless networks are used to get smart electricity meters talking, these are the HAN (home area network) and WAN (wide area network).

The HAN is a secure network that allows smart electricity meters to communicate with smart gas meters and with the In-Home Display, using a Smart Gateway or home computer.

Smart electricity meters use the HAN to talk to the smart gas meter and collect gas readings, which is done using a network called Zigbee.

Communicating with the energy supplier

The WAN (wide area network) used mobile data, with IoT Multi-Network Roaming SIMs to send and receive data. It allows the smart electricity meter to communicate securely outside the home, using the multiple mobile networks.

As soon as the smart electricity meter has gathered readings from the smart gas meter it uses the WAN to send them, together with the electricity readings, to the energy supplier.
